“Akutagawa Prize and Harry Up Syndrome using Generative AI”

At the beginning of the New Year in 2024, a collision between a JAL plane and a Japan Coast Guard plane caused a fiery incident that shocked the world, but due to a combination of assumptions on the part of the Japan Coast Guard plane and hurried-up syndrome, the JAL plane's captain and cabin crew were not able to accurately report the situation. The fact that all 379 passengers and crew members were able to escape through judgment, action, and the cooperation of the passengers was nothing short of a relief and an accomplishment. Although this can only be attributed to their daily motivation and training, I am in awe of the CAs who were able to calmly deal with the extreme situation. I speculate that the situation with the Japan Coast Guard was that they rushed to interpret it in a way that suited them and got out of control. Ambiguity in Japanese language can be both a weapon and a weakness.

I have tried generation AI several times, but it is not accurate enough when it comes to historical facts, and if it is a machine that can only provide information within the range of data input from the administrator, it will not be able to efficiently express the ordinary world such as sentences written by officials. There are some people who are trying to do that. If the answer is difficult for the questioner, the generation AI will reply that it cannot do it, but apart from that, it will somehow try to rush the answer, so it will just put words on its own and get out of the situation. He also has a cunning side, so literary samurai must keep an eye on him.

I hear that a female author won the Akutagawa Prize, which is said to be prestigious in Japanese books, for her work that makes full use of generative AI. Although the title sounds like ``Tokyo Tower of Sympathy'', if you were an ordinary literary samurai, you wouldn't aim for the Akutagawa Prize even if you made full use of generative AI. When readers are told that she proudly used generative AI, they are hesitant to pick up the book. This author may have been engulfed by a kind of hurried-up syndrome in order to avoid being left behind by the times. She may have had the title come up with the generative AI. It's because the image doesn't come to mind at all. Couldn't the title be more appealing to the senses? At the press conference to receive the award, she proudly said that she used the generative AI as is, but perhaps the selectors didn't notice. Some people are calling for the award to be cancelled.

Unlike in the past, the Akutagawa Prize is no longer selected by literary giants, but now there is a tendency for writers to choose based on their individual tastes. We, the people of Japan, shared the moment when the prestigious Akutagawa Prize fell prey to generative AI. I hope Bungei Shunju-den is acutely aware that there are many unknown writers out there who are struggling every day and devoting themselves to using their own words.
